degree polymerization

Polymerization:

In the polymer chemistry polymerization is a process of reacting monomer molecules together in a chemical reaction to form polymer chains or three dimensional network. A chemical reaction bonding monomers together make a polymer is called polymerization.

Degree of polymerization (DP):

The number of repeating unit is present in a polymeric chain is called degree of polymerization.
The ratio of the molecular weight of polymer & the molecular weight of monomer is called degree of polymerization.
Degree of polymerization is denoted by DP.
DP = molecular weight of polymer (M) / molecular weight of monomer (m).
So, DP = M/m

example: poly-vinyl-chloride has 1000 DP. Determine the molecular weight of that polymer.
Solutiobr/>n: here, DP = 1000,
Molecular weight of monomer (m)= 12+1*2+12+1+35.5 (CH2CHCl) = 62.5
So, molecular wight of polymer (M) =?

We know, DP = M/m
=> M = DP*m = 1000*62.5 = 62500.
